What we measure
Every number on this site came from loading a real page in a real browser and writing down what happened. Here is what that does and does not cover.
How a site gets measured
We load a few real article pages from the site in a headless browser, wait, scroll, and record what it did: how long until the largest thing painted, how many advertising and tracking requests it made, how many bytes it moved, whether anything covered the screen, whether anything played sound. No cached copy of the page is kept — only the measurements.
We measure the page as served, not as an ad blocker leaves it. A grade that changed depending on which extensions you happen to run would not be explicable to you or to the site’s owner.
Where we have got to
| Sites measured | 7,444 |
|---|---|
| Passed | 5,920 |
| Penalized | 397 |
| Excluded | 251 |
| Render failed | 876 |
| Measured on | 2026-10-17 |
“Not measured” is an answer
When a render fails we do not guess, and we do not exclude the site for it — a failed render is absence of evidence, not evidence of a problem. The site stays queued and its card says so. 876 sites are in that state right now.
The same goes for things we have not built yet. Green hosting appears on every report card as “not measured”, because we have not measured it, and so do readability and accessibility on any site we have not yet put through that run. A zero there would be a claim we have not earned.
What is weak about this
- A handful of pages, on one day, in one place, on a fast connection. Sites vary by page, by region, and over time.
- Automated accessibility checking catches perhaps a third of real problems, so a clean result is a floor. We say “no automated violations detected” and never “accessible”.
- Readability and accessibility are measured on one page per site. For sites the crawler never reached, that page is the homepage, which is not where the reading happens — so we show those readability numbers and do not let them into the grade.
- “Largest paint” is not the same thing as time-to-first-readable-sentence, which is what we actually want and do not yet record.
- Ad and tracker counts come from public filter lists. They miss things, and they occasionally catch something innocent.
